Music #3: Epic: The Musical, The Ocean Saga

The way that these sagas come out is usually in twos, one saga and then a month late the second, then third came out six months later with the fourth coming out a month later. I mention this only because I know the first two sagas by heart because I've been able to listen to them seven to eight months longer than the last two currently out. Despite this, I have listened to the third saga, or, The Ocean Saga, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were many sounds that became wildly popular on TikTok, at least on my algorithm anyway. There are four songs featured on The Ocean Saga, in order they are, "Storm", "Luck Runs Out", "Keep Your Friends Close", and "Ruthlessness". Of these four songs, Ruthlessness is the song that very quickly became the star of the saga, which after listening I have to say I agree. There are many lyrics to make not of in all four songs. For example, in "Storm" there is the repeated line Storm (Wonder how they thought of the title) which is sung almost like the howl of wind, which makes sense considering this song is supposed to be in the middle of a storm. I felt that this was an amazing decision and truly started the album off on a high note. The trumpet line at the beginning and underneath every other instrument also makes for an amazing tune.

Though "Luck Runs Out" is an amazing song it falls beneath the other three in comparison. Of course, I still love it a lot, especially with the echo on the word "how", it just brings the whole song together beautifully. I also love hoe "we're in the home of the wind god" is sung, just something in the rhythm can scratch the itch in anyone's brain. Overall, the beat of this song as well as the topic is amazing, and despite it being below the other three songs on the album it's still an amazing song. In "Keep Your Friends Close" it has an airy vibe, which fits wonderfully with the topic of the wind god Aeolus. It also has a topic that makes it really easy listen to, not to mention the female voice in this song. Her voice is simply beautiful and is incredibly easy to listen to. It also has many callbacks to previous songs, not just in the same saga but also in The Troy Saga and The Ocean Saga. I also love the way it ends, it introduces the next song without actually starting it, which is exactly what a good musical should have. Songs should lead into other songs and "Keep Your Friends Close" does that perfectly, in my opinion anyway.

The last song in the saga, and arguably my favourite song in this saga is "Ruthlessness". I mean just the voice alone is amazing, it got a gravelly tone to it that is different from the main character's which already gives the song an air of difference. I normally associate deeper voices with being evil, which is how I would associate Poseidon, which is the character singing this song. There are also lines that became increasingly popular from both "Ruthlessness" and "Keep Your Friends Close". The lines from Ruthlessness are:

You are the worst kind of good

Cause you're not even great

A Greek who reeks

of false righteousness

Thats what I hate

These lines easily make up the whole song for me, I was addicted before I had heard the full song. I honestly think that these lines, at least the first two go incredibly hard. They make me want to see even more of this character, being Poseidon, in other songs. By the way the last line says "remember me", a call back from a The Cyclops Saga, it is clear there will be another song featuring Poseidon and the brilliant singer behind the voice, Steven Rodriguez.
